From there, we made our way to a viewpoint that offered a panoramic view of the entire medina, including its southern tower and mosques.
Exploring the medina on foot, we were captivated by its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The narrow streets, organized by various guilds such as potters and dyers, transported us back in time. The vibrant atmosphere and bustling crowds made it evident that we were wandering through a medieval town where time seemed to have stood still.
After a day filled with exploration, we returned to the riad for a delightful dinner. The riad provided a comfortable and authentic setting for us to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. We spent the night at the riad, ready to continue our adventure the next day.
Day 3 : Fes » Volubilis » Moulay Idriss » Meknes » Rabat.
Following breakfast, we embark on the third day of our trip by heading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis. Here, we encounter the extensive Roman ruins, which serve as the largest preserved Roman influences in North Africa. Despite the devastating earthquake of 1755, Volubilis continues to showcase intricate and awe-inspiring mosaics, maintaining its remarkable beauty amidst past damages and disasters.
Our journey then takes us to Meknes, a city of great historical significance and once a prominent center of the Roman Empire. It was originally known as Miknasa due to its association with the 10th Berber settlement and later transformed into one of the Imperial cities. Immersed in a magical experience, we explore the authentic ancient quarter of old Meknes, delving into a captivating tale of history, glory, and enchantment.
Continuing our itinerary, we proceed to Rabat, the present-day capital of Morocco. In Rabat, we are treated to a series of remarkable landmarks, including the iconic Hassan Tower, the grand Mohammed V Mausoleum, and the captivating Kasbah of Oudaias. After exploring the mosque, we will make our way to Marrakech in the early afternoon. As we approach the city, we anticipate immersing ourselves in other facets of Moroccan culture. Upon arrival, we will waste no time and begin our exploration by venturing into Jemaa el Fna, a vibrant square and marketplace located in Marrakech’s old medina.
The origins of the name “Jemaa el Fna” are shrouded in uncertainty. Some stories suggest that it was once the site where Sultans executed their enemies, while others propose a religious interpretation, translating it as “The Mosque at the End of the World.” Today, the square holds a different allure, attracting both Moroccans and tourists alike. It offers a captivating blend of entertainment and showcases the diverse facets of Moroccan culture.
As we navigate through Jemaa el Fna, we will witness the lively atmosphere, experience local performances, and encounter the various elements that make up the rich tapestry of Moroccan traditions.
